Why SMA Individuals May Struggle with Physical Activities
Spinal Muscular Atrophy, also known as SMA, can make physical activities more difficult because the condition weakens the motor neurons that control voluntary muscle movement. As motor neurons are lost, the muscles they control can become weaker and smaller, making everyday actions such as lifting the arms, sitting upright, standing, walking, transferring, reaching, or maintaining posture more physically demanding. Proximal muscles around the shoulders, hips, thighs, trunk, and neck are often affected significantly, which can make activities requiring balance, endurance, or repeated movement especially challenging. This means a task that appears simple to someone without SMA may require far more effort, concentration, and energy for someone living with the condition.
Fatigue is another major reason people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy may struggle with physical activity. Weaker muscles often have to work harder to complete the same movement, so repeated activity can lead to faster exhaustion. Some individuals may also experience limited range of motion, joint contractures, scoliosis, reduced respiratory strength, or difficulty maintaining proper positioning, all of which can influence physical performance. The goal of activity for someone with SMA is therefore not always to “push harder.” Physical therapy and carefully individualized exercise may help support flexibility, endurance, posture, comfort, and function, but activities often need to be adapted to avoid excessive fatigue or overuse. The right level of movement can vary greatly depending on SMA type, age, treatment history, respiratory health, and individual strength.
