Where Can SMA Patients Receive Spinraza?
Spinraza, also known as nusinersen, is a disease-modifying SMA treatment that must be administered at a medical facility equipped to perform intrathecal injections. This means the medication is delivered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid through a lumbar puncture by, or under the direction of, healthcare professionals experienced with the procedure. The official Spinraza treatment-center locator states that designated treatment centers are available throughout the United States, while Cure SMA also maintains a location finder showing adult and pediatric sites that provide Spinraza and other approved SMA therapies.
SMA patients may receive Spinraza at specialized neuromuscular clinics, children’s hospitals, academic medical centers, or other designated treatment facilities with physicians experienced in administering the medication. Before treatment begins, a healthcare provider determines whether Spinraza is appropriate, helps coordinate insurance and treatment logistics, and connects the patient with an experienced treatment center. Blood and urine testing is performed before treatment and before each dose to monitor for potential safety risks. For individuals with scoliosis, spinal fusion, or complex spinal anatomy, treatment planning may require additional expertise or imaging guidance, making access to an experienced SMA medical team especially important.
