When SMA Equipment Fails — Lives Are Affected
For many individuals with SMA, medical and adaptive equipment is not simply convenient — it can be essential for safety, health, communication, movement, and participation in everyday life. Power wheelchairs can provide mobility and independence, while respiratory equipment such as BiPAP machines, cough-assist devices, suction machines, and pulse oximeters can support breathing and airway clearance. Specialized respiratory equipment is often used to help people with SMA breathe, cough, clear secretions, and monitor oxygen levels. When these devices malfunction, lose power, break, or become unavailable, the consequences can extend far beyond inconvenience.
Equipment failure can affect nearly every part of life with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. A broken power wheelchair may leave someone unable to move independently, attend school or work, reach medical appointments, reposition comfortably, or participate in community life. A malfunctioning respiratory device can become even more serious for individuals who depend on breathing support or airway-clearance equipment, particularly during sleep or respiratory illness. People with SMA may have weak respiratory muscles, ineffective cough, increased pneumonia risk, and a greater need for breathing support during illness. Equipment problems can also place additional physical and emotional pressure on caregivers, especially when replacement parts, repairs, insurance authorization, or backup equipment are not immediately available.
