What is the Rarity of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)?
Spinal Muscular Atrophy is found in approximately 1 in 11,000 births in the United States and affects all races and genders.
The rarity of SMA can sometimes make it harder for the public to understand what the condition truly is. Many people may never meet someone with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which can lead to misconceptions about disability, independence, caregiving, accessibility, and quality of life. The overall prevalence of SMA has been estimated at about 1 to 2 people per 100,000, showing just how uncommon this rare disease is in the general population. However, even though SMA itself is rare, genetic carriers are much more common. Around 1 in 50 Americans is a genetic carrier for SMA, meaning awareness, carrier screening, newborn screening, and early education can make a meaningful difference.
