What Happens to SMA Patients When Transportation Fails?
For many individuals with SMA, reliable transportation is not just a convenience — it is a lifeline to medical appointments, therapy, school, employment, community events, and everyday independence. When accessible transportation fails, a missed ride can quickly become a missed treatment, delayed respiratory care, canceled specialist visit, or lost opportunity to participate in daily life. The CDC recognizes transportation as a major barrier for people with disabilities, especially when public or private transportation is unavailable or inaccessible.
Transportation failures can have a greater impact on people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy because travel often requires wheelchair-accessible vehicles, ramps or lifts, securement systems, caregiver assistance, extra space for medical equipment, and more time for transfers and preparation. A vehicle breakdown, late paratransit pickup, inaccessible rideshare, or damaged wheelchair lift can leave someone stranded or unable to safely leave home. These disruptions can also increase physical fatigue, emotional stress, caregiver burden, and health risks, particularly for people who depend on respiratory equipment, feeding support, or time-sensitive medical care. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that transportation providers have specific responsibilities to ensure access for passengers with disabilities, but real-world barriers can still interfere with mobility and independence.
