Understanding the Progression of Treatments for SMA
Spinal Muscular Atrophy, also known as SMA, is a rare genetic neuromuscular disease that affects muscle strength, movement, breathing, swallowing, and daily independence. For many years, SMA care focused heavily on managing symptoms, supporting breathing, improving nutrition, protecting mobility, and maintaining quality of life. Today, the SMA community has more reasons to hope because research and treatment options have changed the way many people understand this condition.
The progression of SMA treatments represents a major step forward in rare disease advocacy and medical innovation. The FDA approved Spinraza in December 2016 as the first-ever approved therapy for all types of SMA, followed by Zolgensma in May 2019 for children under two years old, and Evrysdi in August 2020 for SMA across all ages and types. These treatment milestones helped shift the conversation from only managing decline to also discussing early intervention, long-term care, and the importance of access. For individuals living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, every advancement in treatment can represent more than medicine — it can represent opportunity, possibility, and a stronger future for the next generation.
