The Latest AI Discoveries for SMA Explained
Artificial intelligence is beginning to change how researchers study Spinal Muscular Atrophy, also known as SMA, with some of the newest 2026 research focusing on detecting changes that can be difficult to capture during a traditional clinic visit. At the 2026 Annual SMA Research & Clinical Care Meeting, researchers presented the AI-Sole, a sensor-equipped insole designed to monitor how ambulatory adults with SMA walk during everyday life. In a small early study involving four adults with SMA and four unaffected participants, the technology detected differences in stride speed and foot-pressure patterns that were also associated with established clinical walking assessments. Researchers believe wearable AI and digital biomarkers could eventually help identify subtle changes in mobility, disease progression, or treatment response between medical appointments rather than relying exclusively on occasional clinical testing. These findings remain preliminary, but they demonstrate how artificial intelligence may give researchers a more detailed picture of how SMA affects movement in the real world.
Another major AI development is happening in respiratory monitoring, an especially important area for people with SMA because respiratory muscle weakness can become a serious complication. A 2026 study of 45 people with genetically confirmed SMA combined traditional lung-function testing with respiratory oscillometry and machine-learning models. Researchers found that AI could recognize combinations of respiratory measurements associated with walking status and the need for BiPAP respiratory support, including signals that conventional statistical analysis had not identified as strongly. Machine learning is also being investigated for understanding motor function in treated adults with SMA. A recent longitudinal study found that algorithms using measurements such as nerve-muscle electrical activity, creatine kinase, and respiratory capacity could help estimate motor-function scores, although the models could not yet reliably predict who would respond best to treatment. Together, these discoveries suggest that AI may become useful for combining large amounts of SMA health data and recognizing patterns that could otherwise be difficult for clinicians to see.
