The Challenges of Pursuing Education for Individuals with SMA?
For students living with SMA, pursuing education can come with challenges that go far beyond homework, tests, and classroom expectations. A student may need accessible classrooms, wheelchair-friendly transportation, bathroom accommodations, extra time between classes, physical assistance, medical equipment access, respiratory support, adaptive technology, or flexible attendance policies because of fatigue, illness, appointments, or caregiving needs.
One of the biggest educational challenges for individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy is that school systems are not always designed with disability access in mind from the beginning. Barriers can include inaccessible buildings, narrow classroom layouts, lack of trained staff, unreliable transportation, limited assistive technology, poor communication, or attitudes that underestimate a student’s intelligence because of physical disability. The CDC explains that people with disabilities often face physical, policy, communication, transportation, and attitudinal barriers that can limit full participation in society. In schools, Section 504 protections can help students with disabilities receive regular or special education and related aids and services designed to meet their individual educational needs as adequately as students without disabilities.
