Spinraza Explained in Simple Words for Families
In simple terms, most people with SMA do not produce enough of a protein called SMN protein, which motor neurons need to survive and communicate with muscles. The body has a backup gene called SMN2, but that gene normally produces only a limited amount of fully working SMN protein. Spinraza helps the SMN2 gene produce more full-length SMN protein, giving surviving motor neurons more of the protein they need to function. The FDA classifies Spinraza as an SMN2-directed antisense oligonucleotide approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.
Spinraza is different from a pill or traditional injection because it is delivered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord through a medical procedure called an intrathecal injection, often referred to as a lumbar puncture or spinal injection. Treatment requires multiple initial doses followed by ongoing maintenance doses, meaning Spinraza is not a one-time therapy. Families should also understand that Spinraza does not rebuild motor neurons that have already been permanently lost or guarantee that every individual will gain the same amount of strength. Instead, treatment is intended to increase SMN protein and change the course of SMA, with individual outcomes influenced by factors such as disease severity, age and timing of treatment. Blood and urine testing is also performed before treatment and before doses because healthcare teams monitor for potential bleeding and kidney-related risks.
