SMA Patients Are Getting Hope from This New Discovery
A major new development is giving the SMA community fresh hope: on September 11, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Isembyld, also known as apitegromab-mstn, for adults and children 2 years of age and older with SMA who are already receiving an SMN2-targeted treatment. What makes this breakthrough especially important is that Isembyld is the first FDA-approved SMA therapy designed to directly target muscle loss rather than focusing only on survival motor neuron protein.
Isembyld represents a different approach to Spinal Muscular Atrophy treatment because it is designed to work alongside existing SMN2-targeted therapies and address the muscle weakness that may remain even after motor neuron-focused treatment. In a 52-week clinical trial involving 188 participants with SMA between the ages of 2 and 21, researchers evaluated Isembyld in people who were already taking an approved SMN2-targeted therapy. Among participants ages 2 to 12, those receiving the approved 10 mg/kg dose demonstrated better motor-function outcomes than those receiving placebo, and 34.2% achieved a clinically meaningful improvement compared with 13.5% in the placebo group. This development is significant because it shows that the future of SMA treatment may involve addressing multiple parts of the disease at once, including both motor neuron survival and muscle function.
