Is SMA an Autoimmune Disorder?
Spinal Muscular Atrophy, also known as SMA, is not an autoimmune disorder; it is a rare genetic neuromuscular disease. Autoimmune disorders happen when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, or organs, while SMA is most commonly caused by changes in the SMN1 gene. The SMN1 gene helps the body make survival motor neuron protein, which is essential for the nerve cells that control muscle movement. When this protein is too low, motor neurons can weaken and atrophy, leading to progressive muscle weakness, breathing challenges, swallowing concerns, fatigue, and daily independence needs.
One reason people may confuse SMA with autoimmune disorders is that both can be lifelong conditions, affect daily function, require medical care, and create invisible challenges. However, Spinal Muscular Atrophy does not begin because the immune system attacks the body; it begins because of inherited or genetic changes that affect survival motor neuron protein production. SMA is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning both copies of the SMN1 gene in each cell usually have mutations. Approximately 1 in 50 Americans is a genetic carrier for SMA, showing why carrier screening, newborn screening, genetic counseling, and early diagnosis are important parts of SMA education.
