How Early Diagnosis is Rewriting the Future of SMA
In the past, many children were not diagnosed until weakness, delayed milestones, breathing problems, or other symptoms had already appeared. Today, newborn screening is changing that timeline by allowing SMA to be identified before noticeable symptoms develop. In the United States, SMA was added to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel in 2018, and all 50 states now screen newborns for the condition.
The biggest reason early diagnosis is rewriting the future of SMA is that disease-modifying treatments can be started before extensive irreversible motor neuron loss has occurred. Cure SMA reports that research and real-world evidence consistently show better outcomes when treatment begins early, ideally before symptoms appear. A newborn who receives a positive SMA screening result still needs confirmatory genetic testing, but that early warning can dramatically shorten the path from diagnosis to specialist care and treatment. Modern therapies can increase SMN protein or address the underlying genetic cause of SMA, meaning children diagnosed presymptomatically may now have opportunities for motor development and function that were far less likely in the pre-treatment era.
