Zolgensma, also known as onasemnogene abeparvovec-xioi, is an adeno-associated virus vector-based gene therapy approved in the United States for pediatric patients less than 2 years old with SMA caused by bi-allelic mutations in the SMN1 gene. Zolgensma is an SMN-enhancing therapy that works by replacing the function of the missing or nonworking SMN1 gene with a new working copy of an SMN gene.
Another frequent question is: how is Zolgensma given? Zolgensma is given as a one-time intravenous infusion, meaning it is delivered into a vein under medical supervision. This matters because Zolgensma is different from some SMA treatments that require ongoing doses over time.
