FAQ Regarding Spinraza Treatment
One common question in the SMA community is: what is Spinraza treatment? Spinraza, also known as nusinersen, is a prescription medicine used to treat Spinal Muscular Atrophy in pediatric and adult patients. It is classified as a survival motor neuron 2, or SMN2-directed antisense oligonucleotide, meaning it is designed to help the body produce more functional survival motor neuron protein by targeting the backup SMN2 gene. Spinraza is for pediatric and adult SMA patients and it is administered intrathecally, which means it is injected into the fluid around the spinal cord by a trained healthcare professional.
Another frequent question is: how often is Spinraza given? The current FDA labeling describes two dosing regimen options, both involving loading doses followed by maintenance doses. The traditional low-dose regimen includes four loading doses, then a maintenance dose once every four months, while the high-dose regimen uses a different loading and maintenance schedule based on the patient’s treatment journey and medical guidance. Families and individuals also ask whether Spinraza is available for all SMA types and ages. Spinraza is FDA-approved for all ages and types of SMA, which makes it an important part of treatment awareness for the rare disease community. Spinraza is not a cure, but it is considered a disease-modifying treatment because it targets one of the biological causes of SMA by helping increase SMN protein production.
