Exploring the Pros and Cons of Spinraza’s Side Effects
Spinraza, also known as nusinersen, is a prescription medicine used to treat Spinal Muscular Atrophy in pediatric and adult patients, and it is given through an intrathecal injection into the fluid around the spinal cord. Because Spinraza is delivered through a spinal injection and requires ongoing dosing, treatment awareness should include not only how the medication may help, but also what side effects, monitoring, and procedure-related concerns may come with it.
The potential “pros” of Spinraza are connected to its role as a disease-modifying SMA treatment designed to help the body produce more survival motor neuron protein, which is essential for motor neuron function. For many in the SMA community, this kind of treatment represents progress, hope, and a major shift from only managing symptoms to addressing part of the biology behind Spinal Muscular Atrophy. However, the “cons” must also be understood. Spinraza's common side effects in the low-dose regimen, including lower respiratory infection, constipation, fever, headache, vomiting, back pain, and post-lumbar puncture syndrome, while the high-dose infantile-onset SMA regimen lists pneumonia, COVID-19, aspiration pneumonia, and malnutrition among common side effects.
