Evrysdi for SMA: Is it Global?
Evrysdi, also known as risdiplam, has become one of the most widely available disease-modifying treatments for Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA, but “global” does not mean that every person with SMA can access it under the same conditions. Evrysdi works by modifying the way the backup SMN2 gene processes genetic instructions, allowing the body to produce more full-length survival motor neuron, or SMN, protein. Evrysdi is approved in more than 100 countries, demonstrating how far SMA treatment access has expanded since the medication first entered the market. The European Union authorized Evrysdi in 2021, while the United States has also continued expanding treatment options, including FDA approval of a tablet formulation in 2025.
Although Evrysdi has a large international presence, approval and availability can still look very different depending on where a person lives. Each country's regulatory agency determines the exact indication, and national healthcare systems, insurance providers, reimbursement programs, pricing agreements, and prescribing requirements can influence whether a person can actually receive treatment. In the European Union, Evrysdi is authorized for certain people with 5q SMA based on clinical diagnosis or SMN2 copy number, and treatment must be initiated by a physician experienced in managing SMA. Because national policies can differ, an SMA patient who qualifies for Evrysdi in one country may face different eligibility requirements, coverage rules, waiting periods, or specialist access in another. This distinction is important: regulatory approval does not automatically guarantee affordable or immediate treatment access.
