Does Having SMA Affect Your Heart Health?
When asking whether SMA affects heart health, it is important to understand that SMA is mainly known for its impact on the nervous system and skeletal muscles, not as a primary heart disease. SMA is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and impacts muscles used for activities such as breathing, eating, crawling, and walking. Still, heart health can remain an important part of overall care because people living with SMA may face respiratory challenges, reduced mobility, fatigue, and complex medical needs that can influence general wellness.
Research on cardiac involvement in Spinal Muscular Atrophy shows that the relationship between SMA and the heart is still being studied. A systematic review identified reported cases of cardiac abnormalities in people with SMA, along with cardiac findings in SMA animal models, but also noted that studies varied widely and that interpretation can be difficult. Newer research has suggested that the heart may be biologically relevant to SMN deficiency, especially in severe SMA Type 1 cases, where some autopsy and clinical findings included cardiac abnormalities, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, or arrhythmias in a subset of patients. This does not mean every person with SMA will develop heart problems, but it does show why awareness, medical monitoring, and individualized care matter.
