Can SMA Be Reversed or It's Progression Stopped?
SMA causes motor neurons to become damaged and eventually die when the body does not produce enough survival motor neuron, or SMN, protein. Once those motor neurons are permanently lost, current treatments cannot regenerate them. However, modern disease-modifying therapies have dramatically changed the natural course of SMA by protecting remaining motor neurons, increasing functional SMN protein, and helping many people maintain or even improve motor abilities. Cure SMA emphasizes that treatment can prevent or slow motor neuron loss and that outcomes are generally strongest when therapy begins as early as possible.
The difference between reversing SMA and improving function is important. Treatments such as Spinraza and Evrysdi increase functional SMN protein through the SMN2 gene, while gene therapies such as Zolgensma and Itvisma provide functional genetic instructions for producing SMN protein. Some individuals receiving treatment experience stabilization, meaning abilities that historically would have been expected to decline can remain relatively steady, while others gain strength or reach new motor milestones. Those improvements do not mean the underlying genetic condition has disappeared or that previously destroyed motor neurons have returned. Research presented in 2026 continues to show that earlier treatment provides greater protection for motor neurons and muscle function, while people treated after symptoms begin can still experience meaningful benefits.
