AI Breakthrough in Finding an SMA Cure
As SMA research continues to evolve, artificial intelligence is becoming an exciting tool in the search for better treatments and, one day, a possible cure. Current SMA therapies have changed the natural history of the disease, but experts still recognize that existing treatments do not fully cure every symptom or remove every challenge connected to Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
AI can help SMA researchers study large amounts of biological data, identify disease-related molecules, predict new genetic or protein targets, and better understand the complex pathways affected by low survival motor neuron protein. In one AI-guided SMA study, researchers used a machine-learning approach to predict new genes of interest, then validated 8 out of 13 selected molecules in an SMA mouse model, showing how artificial intelligence may help make targeted rare disease research more efficient.
