The Meaning Behind SMA Victor
Something I don’t really talk about much is the effectiveness my SMA has on me. Because my disability is progressive and because of how my SMA affects me. I am slowed down by default. The more effort and movement I do the more fatigued I become.
To give you an imaginative visual is I can move my arm to give and receive a hug to two people, but when it comes to the third person I am fatigued not being able to give while receiving a hug. Samething applies to shaking hands. By default I am not only limited and restricted, but I am also constantly being slowed down.
This is what I learned: SMA may slow you down, but being limited isn’t so much of a bad thing. Because although yes, SMA will take it’s toll on us. It is our SMA that gives us the upper hand… the advantage I like to say.
By being slowed down you experience more of the moment because you really have no other choice. This moment right here is what many people pass way too fast. The moments where you feel stuck… teaches you how to get unstuck. The moments when you are being challenged… are the moments that teaches you how to adapt. The moments that take your breath away… are the moments that teaches you how to appreciate the breath of life. “Everything is a matter of perspective.”
To give you an imaginative visual is picture yourself in a moving vehicle. Who do you think will notice what the sign said when you passed by it? The one who passed that sign going 80mph or the one who passes by it going 30? Where I am going with this is just because it may look and feel like everyone around you is able to do things much faster than you. Doesn’t necessarily mean they are ahead of you.
Welcome to SMA Victor! Where SMA by default challenges us from the very beginning. But just because we are being challenged and tested within our everyday life doesn’t mean you have to accept defeat.
For all who live having SMA has their own unique set of challenges and obstacles within their day to day. For some… getting out of bed is a win. For some… feeding yourself is a win. For some… waking up is a win.
SMA Victor is created to share more SMA Awareness, but with the intention having a message behind the name.
Having SMA can be challenging, however just because something is challenging doesn’t mean the very thing in front of us is impossible. The word ‘Victor’ means to conquer, win, triumph. As much as SMA can have us feeling defeated we can choose to do the impossible becoming the defeater. I believe you are not born by mistake. I believe you can achieve the impossible!
To be a SMA Victor means having the strength to try just one more time. You can’t pick up a 1 pound weight? Try one more time. You can’t pick up your drink? Try one more time. You can’t write a sentence? Try one more time. You can’t hold your head up? Try one more time. Trying one more time is what makes you a SMA Victor because many will quit doing something once, but you - you are willing to do it once more. Everything I just mentioned was what I personally experienced and done.
There was a point in my life where I couldn’t pick up a 1 pound weight. Fast forward to present time (on a good day) I can pick up 3. There has been many times I couldn’t pick up my drink, struggled brushing my own teeth, became immensely challenged writing a single sentence, and I even was tested with my neck support not being able to hold it up. How did I do it? I tried one more time.
Please allow me to introduce myself: My name is Victor who goes by “Victortheinspiration” on social media. I have SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) Type Two. I had a spinal fusion in 2010 where I then shortly after had a spinal debridement causing me to experience over dozens of hospital operating room experiences just within my back alone. I graduated in 2017 receiving my high school diploma. Dropped out of community college in 2018. Entered entrepreneurship right after dropping out of community college in 2018 roughly two months later. In January 2020, I went through a severe mental breakdown causing me to be on a psychiatric hold, however, despite going through all of the good, the bad, and the ugly within my story... fast forward to present time 2024, I have built my own website sharing my story, what I have learned, and I create various forms of content on YouTube to help aid others through the places many do not overcome. “It is one thing to know the path, but it is another to have gone through it.” My hope is for you to become the victor in your story.
