The 4 AM Suicide Hotline Call That Changed Wes Woodson's Life

Sometimes, the greatest transformations begin during life's darkest moments, when hope feels distant and the strength to keep moving forward seems impossible to find. For Wes Woodson, a mental health advocate, keynote speaker, and author of "I Have Anxiety (So What?)", that transformation began with a phone call at 4 AM. Growing up, Wes struggled with social anxiety, self-doubt, and an overwhelming desire to feel accepted. Constantly questioning whether he was good enough, he eventually found himself in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship during his senior year of college. What initially appeared to be love gradually became a source of isolation, emotional pain, and lost friendships. By 2020, Wes was experiencing a severe mental health crisis, battling suicidal thoughts and struggling to recognize his own worth.

Listen to This Interview Turned into an AI Song:
During one particularly difficult night, while listening to music in an attempt to calm his racing thoughts, he heard a song featuring the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's former phone number... Logic's song "1-800-273-8255" (featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid), which is a 2017 hip-hop track dedicated to suicide prevention. Uncertain about what would happen, he gathered the courage to call. A woman named Janice answered, offering compassion, understanding, and a safe space where Wes could express emotions, he had been afraid to share. Her simple reminder that it was okay not to be okay helped him find the courage to open up to his therapist and seek additional professional support. That conversation did not erase his struggles overnight, but it marked the beginning of a remarkable journey toward mental health recovery, self-acceptance, and discovering his purpose.
As he began rebuilding his life, he discovered that overcoming anxiety, depression, and emotional trauma required confronting the negative beliefs that had shaped his identity for years. Through therapy and a partial hospitalization outpatient program, he learned how to recognize cognitive distortions, challenge catastrophic thinking, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and understand the importance of treating himself with the same compassion he offered others. One particularly meaningful experience occurred when another patient revealed that hearing Wes openly discuss his struggles had given him the courage to share his own story. Until that moment, Wes had questioned whether his experiences were significant enough to deserve attention, often comparing his pain to the suffering of others. However, this unexpected encounter helped him recognize that vulnerability could create connection and that sharing personal struggles could empower people who felt completely alone.
