Sarah Segrest: How She Found Her Birth Mother After Making Triathlon History

On this episode of Become the Victor Podcast, host Victor Guerra (Victortheinspiration) welcomes Sarah Elizabeth Segrest, a Vietnamese-born adoptee, triathlete, endurance athlete, and history-making competitor whose journey is rooted in faith, identity, resilience, and purpose. Born in Vietnam and adopted into the United States, Sarah grew up navigating the complexity of belonging and later facing racism and painful questions about her identity. Her story is not just about where she came from, but about the strength she developed through every season of uncertainty, adversity, and growth.
Sarah’s life took a major turn after moving to Texas during one of the most difficult seasons of her life. Coming out of a painful relationship that challenged her mental health and faith, she decided to pursue triathlon as a way to prove to herself that she was strong physically, mentally, and spiritually. With almost no experience in swimming, biking, or competitive triathlon, Sarah pushed herself into unfamiliar territory and eventually became the first Vietnamese-born woman to win a USA Triathlon Texas State Championship title. What began as a personal challenge became a historic milestone, showing that resilience is not built in comfort but through the decision to keep moving forward.
The most emotional part of Sarah Elizabeth Segrest’s story came when her triathlon success helped lead her back to her birth mother in Vietnam. After years of wondering, searching, and carrying questions about her origin, Sarah finally reunited with the woman who gave her life.
