After reaching adulthood, Promise moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and began pursuing acting. Although she traces the beginning of that journey to approximately 2019, the pandemic shutdown interrupted her progress. In 2023, she bought a laptop, began learning more about the business of acting, enrolled in acting classes, and eventually booked her first short film. Her path was not handed to her. She had to educate herself, enter unfamiliar spaces, and continue building a dream that other people sometimes encouraged her to abandon.
When acting opportunities were not immediately available, Promise’s coach helped her recognize that she did not have to wait for someone else to choose her. She could write. That realization became the foundation for The Runaways, a coming-of-age screenplay containing pieces of her own history. Promise drew from experiences of running away from a group home, being brought back, feeling abandoned, and searching for the kind of family that remains present during hardship. The completed script became more than a creative project. It gave language and characters to experiences she had previously carried within herself.
