Joy grew up surrounded by movement. His family left the village where he was born, lived in Ivory Coast, and traveled through several countries as his father’s career evolved from missionary work to linguistics, professional translation, and eventually work as a private translator. Constant exposure to different places and cultures gave Joy an unusual relationship with belonging. He came to understand that home could exist wherever his people were, while art became a language he could use across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Long before Joy understood where that creativity might lead, his father encouraged him to pursue music, dance, filmmaking, and storytelling. Joy would later discover that his father had once been involved in theater himself, writing plays and acting before setting that dream aside to build a different future for his family.
That legacy took on an entirely different meaning when his father passed away unexpectedly in an accident. The loss shattered the structure he had depended on for guidance, celebration, and perspective. Joy spoke candidly on Become the Victor Podcast about becoming suicidal, requiring intensive care and relying on a small circle of people who remained beside him when he was difficult to reach. Among the most important influences was his therapist, who did not force him to appear better from one session to the next. Instead, she created room for anger, sadness, confusion, and grief to exist without a deadline. Joy Ndombeson’s story is ultimately not about escaping grief or leaving the past behind. It is about learning how to carry what mattered forward.
