Jose opens up about growing up as a Puerto Rican boy from the Bronx, New York, and being diagnosed with SMA Type III, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, at just three years old.
Although he was able to walk, run, and live an active childhood, his body began changing during high school, forcing him to face the painful reality of losing strength, independence, and eventually his ability to walk. What once felt like a curse and a prison became the beginning of a deeper journey toward purpose, gratitude, and becoming the author of his own story.
Throughout the conversation, Jose shares the emotional battles behind his public message, including depression, self-doubt, fear, and the painful question of whether anyone would ever love him after his disability progressed. After moving from New York to Florida at 22, he entered one of the darkest seasons of his life, feeling defeated and uncertain about his future. Yet through humility, faith, family, marriage, and a powerful mindset shift, Jose began rebuilding his life from the inside out.
His story highlights the importance of asking for help, choosing gratitude, and learning that resilience is not only found in breakthrough moments, but in the ordinary days when a person keeps moving forward even when life feels heavy. From working in corporate America for 20 years to betting on himself as an entrepreneur, Jose proves that limiting beliefs can be broken when someone decides their struggle will not become their standard.
Jose’s transformation eventually became bigger than himself when he realized his story could inspire others to keep going. One of the most powerful moments came after speaking to a student who was considering giving up on becoming a neurosurgeon, only for her to say that his story gave her the fire to continue because maybe one day she could help find a cure for SMA. That moment confirmed for Jose that his pain had purpose.
