From Division I Football Scholarship to Bodybuilder | Eric Niederberger

On this episode of Become the Victor Podcast, host Victor Guerra (Victortheinspiration) welcomes Eric Niederberger, who speaks candidly about alcohol and drug abuse, fighting, having several concussions, and the passing of a former football player he knew whose brain was later found to have severe CTE. He also recalls a frightening night involving Xanax when he drifted in and out of consciousness, followed later by a DUI in his mid-twenties. Even those consequences did not immediately change his behavior. The deeper shift began when he finally took his court-mandated classes seriously. Thirty days without alcohol became six months, and six months eventually became an entire year without alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs.

What transpired from that chapter was a fundamentally different relationship with discipline. Eric says he had spent much of his earlier life relying on natural talent, but eventually learned that talent and temporary motivation could only carry him so far. Discipline became the accumulation of small decisions and non-negotiables repeated over time. He credits that change with improving his professional career, relationships, and approach to bodybuilding. His entry into competition came through an unexpected path: after passing an EMT course and being accepted into a fire academy, he tore his pec from the bone while bench pressing and underwent reconstructive surgery. While recovering, his competitive instincts eventually pulled him toward bodybuilding. He prepared for his first show for approximately 36 weeks, placed first, and became fascinated with the process.
His story, however, is not only about recovering from poor decisions. He also remembers being the high-school student whose teammates laughed when he suggested he could become a Division I athlete. After struggling academically with roughly a 1.8 GPA, encouragement from his father pushed him to spend his high-school summers repairing his grades. He eventually maintained a 3.5 GPA, became one of only two players from that group to earn a Division I scholarship, and received a full ride offer from Colorado State. Years later, the person he identifies as his hero is not an NFL player or bodybuilding champion, but his father... the man he now understands differently after becoming a father himself.
