Battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy While Fighting for a Cure | Elijah Stacy

Elijah J. Stacy has turned living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy into a mission that reaches far beyond his own diagnosis. Diagnosed at six years old, he grew up experiencing the progressive loss of physical abilities that comes with Duchenne, including eventually losing the ability to walk and facing increasing limitations in his upper-body strength. Yet adversity became a catalyst for purpose. At just 15 years old, after learning more about the progression and severity of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, he founded Destroy Duchenne, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people affected by DMD, supporting promising science, raising awareness, and ultimately contributing to the pursuit of better treatments and a cure. His motivation is deeply personal: his younger brother Kai also lives with Duchenne, while his brother Max passed away at just 14 years old. Elijah describes himself as having gone through “the door of suffering first,” allowing him to help make the path easier for those who come behind him.

His ambitions, however, extend far beyond Duchenne muscular dystrophy awareness. Elijah believes his larger purpose is to minimize human suffering and help propel human prosperity, a philosophy that has led him into biotechnology, public speaking, investing, writing, and patient advocacy. Through Destroy Duchenne, he has worked to directly support families facing what he describes as the “disability tax,” including expenses such as wheelchair repairs and other costs that would not exist without disability.
His book, A Small If, began as an effort to bring awareness to Duchenne but evolved into a broader exploration of purpose, self-image, adversity, and focusing on what can be controlled. He has even begun working toward bringing that story to film through a screenplay. His passion for problem-solving also shapes his long-term vision: he hopes to eventually use significant financial success to invest directly into scientific research addressing diseases such as ALS, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, and other conditions that cause human suffering.
